The Mayet brothers - Mahmoud and Mohammed

45 Years of Sharing Wimpy Moments

The Mayet brothers, Mahmoud and Mohammed, along with their wives, Habiba and Faridah, have been serving the Muslim community in Durban Central for 45 successful years from their Halaal Wimpy in Queen Street. But now it’s time for them to take an extended moment to rest and enjoy their retirement.

The Mayet family opened the first ever Halaal Wimpy in the country, setting the standard for the many Halaal restaurant owners who have joined the Wimpy family along the way. This was truly a remarkable achievement and testament to Wimpy’s open-door policy, even in the days before we became the Rainbow Nation.

The Mayet family shared this statement with us:
“Our journey with Wimpy started 45 years ago at our first location in Pietermaritzburg. Six years later we moved to the iconic and well-known Queen Street where we have happily and successfully operated our business and enjoyed the support of the KwaZulu-Natal Muslim community. We are eternally grateful for our patrons’ support over the years and the loyalty they’ve shown us and our business. This is a bitter sweet moment for us because we are bidding farewell to our long-time customers, who over time became family, but we are looking forward to enjoying our retirement with our families.”

Thank you for your 45 years of service and all the memories you’ve helped make for your customers at Wimpy Queen Street. You’ve really proved that a family that shares Wimpy moments together, stays together!
